Our speaker for the Awards Banquet at the Section Meeting will be Bruce Bjornstad.
Bruce Bjornstad is a licensed
geologist/hydrogeologist and senior research scientist at the Pacific Northwest
National Laboratory. He has a B.S. in geology from the University of New
Hampshire and an M.S. in geology from Eastern Washington University. Bjornstad
lives in Richland and has studied the Ice Age floods for over 30 years,
regularly presenting lectures and leading field trips on the subject and is an
active member of the Ice Age Floods Institute. Bjornstad also worked closely
with the National Park Service to develop its proposal for a first-of-its-kind,
Ice-Age Floods National Geologic Trail, recently passed into law by the U.S.
Congress. Bjornstad has authored two geologic guidebooks on the Ice Age
(Missoula) floods: one for the Mid-Columbia Basin and most recently one for the
Northern Reaches (northern Idaho and the Channeled Scabland) in collaboration
with Dr. Eugene Kiver.
From the air, one can see the
topological formations of swirls, cliffs, coulees, and channels created by the
Missoula Floods from an entirely different perspective than from the ground.
The program will feature Bruce’s presentation of “A Bird’s Eye View of the Ice
Age Floods”. He will identify the land formations we pass by every day without
a second thought and divulge routes one can take by car or plane to view the
formations unique to Eastern Washington. Check out this link for some more information and some pictures of the area . |
